QUALIFIED IMMUNITY FOR POLICE OFFICERS

QUIn order to better understand why, read the explanation at "Qualified Immunity:  Explained - The Appeal", June 19, 2020, by Amir H. Ali and Emily Clark.

"In our Explainer series, Justice Collaborative lawyers and other legal experts help unpack some of the most complicated issues in the criminal justice system. We break down the problems behind the headlines—like bail, civil asset forfeiture, or the Brady doctrine—so that everyone can understand them. Wherever possible, we try to utilize the stories of those affected by the criminal justice system to show how these laws and principles should work, and how they often fail."

From The Economist magazine:  The Supreme Court is currently considering whether to hear several cases concerning qualified immunity and its excesses. A diverse range of supporters—not just the usual suspects, such as the American Civil Liberties Union and the libertarian Cato Institute, but also conservative Christian groups, such as the Alliance Defending Freedom—is urging the justices to take another look at the doctrine. Effective policing requires community support, and police officers who place themselves above the law will never get it.
